Build an Outfit Around One Piece: 5 Simple Steps
Shop an outfit around one piece with ADDMPS: choose star or backdrop, set your colours, match formality, then finish with shoes and one smart accessory.
Wear a t-shirt under a blazer with confidence: the right tee fabric, neckline and length, which jackets work, the best shoes and when to skip it. From ADDMPS.

A t-shirt under a blazer works when the tee is plain, fits closely without clinging, and is made from a substantial fabric, and when the blazer is soft enough to carry a casual look. Choose a solid white, navy, grey or black crew neck, tuck it or leave it exactly as long as the rules below say, and pair it with dark jeans or chinos. That is the whole formula, and it has kept the tee-and-blazer outfit on the right side of smart casual for decades.
The details decide whether it looks like a considered outfit or a rushed one. Below are the rules for the tee, the jacket, the trousers, the shoes and the rooms where this combination is a bad idea.
A tee under a jacket is much more exposed than a tee on its own, because only the neckline and the fit through the chest are visible. Both must be right.
Leave it out in most cases, but control the length. The hem should end around the base of your fly or the middle of your hip pockets, well within the blazer’s hem. If the tee hangs below the jacket, the eye sees a stripe of fabric at the bottom that makes your torso look longer and your legs shorter. If the tee is too long, shorten it at the tailor or choose a slightly shorter cut, which many brands describe as a “modern” or “cropped” length.
A tuck is possible if you wear a belt and trousers with a mid-to-high rise, for a smarter and more retro look. A half-tuck, where you tuck only the front hem, is a stylish shortcut for slightly long tees, but avoid it if the tee is thin.
The blazer must have the same relaxed attitude as the tee. A stiff, heavily padded suit jacket with a t-shirt looks like half of a suit, and the tee looks like an afterthought. Choose:
Fit still matters: the shoulders must hug, the chest must close without pulling, and the sleeve should end at the wrist bone. Use the checklist in our guide to how a jacket should fit. Since there is no shirt collar to fill the neck of the jacket, watch for a gap at the back of the collar. That will show more on a tee than on a shirt.
Dark, well-fitted jeans in indigo or black are the classic pairing. Chinos in stone, olive or navy lean smarter. Fine wool trousers make the look dressier and, in a matching colour, can turn a tee-and-blazer outfit into a soft-suit combination. Avoid distressed denim and heavily faded washes.
Do not wear it to interviews, client meetings in conservative industries, formal events, weddings and any dress code that asks for a collared shirt. Our business-casual guide shows what to wear when a tee is not acceptable. In relaxed creative offices, it can work on a casual day if colleagues do the same. Otherwise, wear a fine knit polo or an open-collar shirt.
Wash at a cool temperature, inside out, with similar colours, and avoid high-heat drying, which shrinks the length faster than the width. Fold rather than hang, since hanging stretches the shoulders. Replace tees that have a wavy neckline or sleeves that flare out; a worn tee looks tired under a crisp jacket.
That depends on your office. In casual or creative workplaces, yes, provided the tee is plain and well-fitted. In formal settings, it is not appropriate. If you are not sure, watch what other people wear or ask about the dress code.
White is the sharpest, and grey, navy and black are the easiest. Match the tee to the jacket’s tone: a dark tee under a light jacket, or a light tee under a dark jacket, gives contrast.
Usually not. Choose a tee with the right length so it stays untucked and hidden below the jacket. Tuck only with a belt and a higher-rise trouser.
You can, but it turns the outfit into a fashion statement rather than smart casual. If you do it, keep the graphic small and the blazer plain and dark.
Start with the jacket, since it decides the outfit: browse men’s blazers at ADDMPS and read the fabric description on each product page.
